Why Holi is celebrated

The festival is celebrated in the joy due to the victory of goodness over the evilness. According to Bishnu Puran, in the ancient time there was a King named Hiranyakashipu. He was a Demon. His wife name is Kayadhu; son name is Prahallad and sister name was Holika. Holika was a devotee of Agni Devata (God of Fire). She had got a blessing from Agni Devata that fire can not born her.Agni Devata said in his blessing, this power is only for your defence, not for attack anybody.

Hiranyakashipu had banned worship of God Bishnu in his Kingdom. His son Prahallad became a great devotee of God Bishnu. He ordered his son not to worship God Bishnu. His son Prahallad did not follow his father’s order and continue worshiping God Bishnu. So Hiranyakashipu wants to kill his son.So he told his sister Holika to kill Prahallad.Holika given a plan she will burn Prahallad in fire. She told her brother Agni Devata has given me a blessing fire can not burn me.I will sit on fire keeping Prahallad in my lap.Agni can not burn me but Prahallad will burn on fire.I will tell Prahallad I will show a magic in front of people. You know Agni Devata had given me blessing that fire can not burn me.I wil sit on fire and you will sit on my lap.Agni (Fire) can never burn us.

According to her plan a lot of of wood is placed in a place. She sit over the wood keeping Prahallad in her lap. Then fire is attached to the wood. The bundles of wood starts burning and in the fire and Holika is burned. She forget that Agni Devata had given her the blessing to protect her from the fire, but she used the blessing of Agni Devata to attack Prahallad. So the blessing became invalid for that condition and God Bishnu saves Prahallad life from fire.So the people watching the magic show become happy and they starts play Holi in a joy because their prince Prahallad did not burn in fire.It is the event of Satya Yuga.So from that day every year Holi festival is observed by the people.
